We Found One of Knoxville's Best Hidden Parks for Kids (And It's Completely Free!)

If you're looking for a newer place to let your kids burn off some energy, I have to share one of our favorite finds in Knoxville!

We recently visited the BlueCross Healthy Place at Morningside Park, and I honestly can't believe it took us this long to discover it. Located just minutes from downtown Knoxville, this beautiful park is packed with activities for kids of all ages while also offering plenty of space for adults to get outside and stay active.

What makes this park even more special is its story.

Located in East Knoxville, an area rich in history, Morningside Park has been a beloved gathering place for generations. The Legacy Parks Foundation partnered with the City of Knoxville to apply for a BlueCross Healthy Place grant, and the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Foundation invested $5.5 million to transform the park into the first BlueCross Healthy Place in the Knoxville area. The project officially opened in December 2023, creating an inclusive space where families of all ages and abilities can play, exercise, and spend time together.

What You'll Find at Morningside Park

This isn't your average neighborhood playground! Some of our favorite features include:

  • An accessible playground designed for children of all abilities
  • A fun challenge course for older kids and adults
  • An Obstacle Course for the toddlers as well.
  • A 40-yard dash where kids can race their friends
  • Outdoor fitness equipment
  • A large multipurpose field with bleachers
  • A paved walking trail that's perfect for strollers
  • Two community pavilions
  • Restrooms
  • Accessible parking

Beyond the BlueCross Healthy Place, the park also features an 18-hole disc golf course, the scenic Morningside Greenway, and is located beside Alex Haley Heritage Square, making it easy to spend several hours exploring everything the park has to offer.

Park Information

Location: 1600 Dandridge Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37915

Hours: Open daily from dawn until dusk.

Is It Worth Visiting?

Absolutely! We have been a few time and have felt safe, but please always be aware of your surroundings.

Whether you're planning a day out with the kids, looking for a new playground, packing a picnic lunch, or simply searching for a free family adventure around East Tennessee, Morningside Park deserves a spot on your list.

We love finding places like this because they encourage kids to climb, explore, run, imagine, and simply be kids, all while giving parents a beautiful place to relax.

If you're in the Knoxville area, add this park to your summer bucket list. I have a feeling your family will love it just as much as ours did!

This park is my kids new favorite! It had so much to do! The obstacle course was a blast and they even had one for the little ones! #knoxvilletennessee #knoxvilleplaygrounds
